UNPFII Recognizes Amazonia for Life: Protect 80%x25 initiative

July 27, 2023

Some very good news: in April the UN Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues held regional dialogues as part of its 22nd session (https://lnkd.in/gQkZvNzd) and 80×25 was discussed…and included in their final report! In particular, the report noted:

19. The Permanent Forum urges all the nine Amazonian States to legally recognize the ancestral territories of Indigenous Peoples, covering 100 million hectares, through the expansion, regulation and collective titling in meeting the target of protecting 80% of the Amazon by 2025. The Permanent Forum underscores that such actions are essential for ensuring immediate mitigation measure to stop the destruction of the Amazon.

This is a big step for our Amazonia for Life: Protect 80%x25 initiative (https://lnkd.in/gRS6wnpb): the first official UN documentation calling for support. Just a first step, and a long way to go for broader UN recognition, but crucial progress! Congratulations to COICA, AVAAZ, Stand.earth and all the others who were there in person to help make this happen!
